Project of the Week: Redmond Senior & Community Center
/The new Redmond Senior & Community Center was featured as the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce’s Project of the Week on June 17, 2024.
The new 52,000-square-foot Redmond Senior & Community Center, located at 8703 160th Ave. N.E., combines dedicated areas for senior adults with spaces for all community members to foster connections and activities across generations.
The center boasts a lounge and library dedicated specifically for seniors, a multipurpose community room with a commercial kitchen, fitness areas, locker rooms, classrooms, meeting spaces, and a gymnasium with an elevated indoor walk/jog track. Redmond’s youngest residents have access to a dedicated Kids Zone.
Sustainable design features include mass plywood panels built with wood products sourced from climate-resilient forestry, air-source heat pumps for efficient heating and cooling, all-electric building systems, and a 156 kW solar photovoltaic system to generate clean energy.
Inspired by the nearby Sammamish River, the center’s design employs biophilic architecture to connect visitors with nature. Expansive wooden elements are exposed in the interior and exterior to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Public art celebrates Redmond’s culture, history and diversity, including a multi-story mural visible in the entryway.
